The Netflix soapy reality series is of 8 episodes and it delves into the lives of the wives and girlfriends of popular athletes and rap stars. So, they are smart, stylish, bold, and fearless. Watch all the 8 episodes if you really want to how these 9 women handle their successful partners while dating with them in the public eye.
Episode 1: Wives. And Girlfriends – Review
Cast: Lakeeta Hill Vaccaro, Alexis Stoudemire, Maranda Johnson, more.
Storyline: Porsha Berto, wife of the world champion boxer Andre Berto, organizes a cocktail party but that doesn’t go well as Sharelle brings up Stoni’s past. Mjae expresses her frustrations of being in a relationship with a rap star.
The Netflix series focuses on wealth and luxury of some of the wives and exes of rich and popular rappers and athletes from across the US. The first introductory line of the series is “I am a Black Barbie, pretty face, perfect body”. And let me tell you that this episode is all about perfect face, perfect body of wives, girlfriends, and exes of the richest people in the US. Honestly speaking, I literally got bored to see this superficial and unengaging reality show that doesn’t have any depth and substance. So, as a viewer, I got to know about materialistic lifestyles and gained insights into their personal lives or struggles to stay in the public eye. No-way can I consider the show to be an unscripted drama as there is no originality and interest that kept me hooked to watch the series even throughout its first episode.
So, what the bold women talk about is their ability to manage fame and how it leads to chaos in their professional worlds of music and sports. So, these women also talk about their childbirth, prenuptial agreements, choosing friends wisely and how reputation is everything for them.
The first couple we are introduced on the Miami Beach Golf Club are Chad Ochocinco and Sharelle. For the unversed, Chad is a retired NFL wide receiver Sharelle’s fiancé, and Sharelle is a Real-estate Broker and fiancée of Chad. It was quite funny to see their banter but uncensored in many ways. They play around with Andre and Porsha at the golf club. Andre Berto is a retired world championship boxer and his wife Porsha is a real-estate agent.
Then we are taken to a jewelry shop where Maranda (Mjae) who is the rapper girlfriend of Kodak Black looking to buy a new jewelry with her small son in hand and another kid (girl child) running around. Maranda says that the life people work towards their whole life, she is living the same at the age of 22. She believes that her kids deserve the world.
Another woman named Stoni who works as a Boutique Owner and ex-girlfriend of Rick Ross enters a cafetaria and meets Alexis who is the ex-wife of Amar’e Stoudemire. They discuss about their past lives and how chaotic it was for them to handle their personal lives in the public eye.
Ashley House is shown where four women party (Alexis who is the ex-wife of Amar’e Stoudemire, Ahsley who is the wife of Philip Wheeler, Porsha, Sharelle) and guess what, I am now totally bored. I really didn’t understand much of their skin-show business and it doesn’t seem to be a reality show for me because it appears more scripted than unscripted.
VERDICT
While W.A.G.s To Riches might provide a glimpse into the glamorous lives of these 9 women, it fails to deliver any real substance or depth at least to me. The focus on materialism and luxurious lifestyle gets old quickly, and the scripted drama feels fake. If you’re looking for a reality show that offers a genuine look into the lives of these women, you are better off looking elsewhere.
I wouldn’t really recommend this show as there are many other reality shows out there that are far more interesting and engaging.
