Crime Beat Review

  • Episode 1: The How What and Why
  • Duration: 36 minutes

Delhi’s infamous gangster Binny Chaudhary comes back to the city but is killed in front of a huge crowd. Young crime reporter Abhishek Sinha starts digging into his life for a big news story.

Positive Aspects:

Crime Beat’s Episode 1 takes us to various sub-plots that introduce us to different characters who all are connected to the main plot of the story. And we get to understand this only when we watch the entire episode.

Saqib Saleem keeps the viewers hooked as Abhishek Sinha, a young journalist who is all set to start his career in crime reporting with his stint at The Express. What interests us most is Abhishek’s conversations with DCP Uday Kumar (played by Rajesh Tailang) and Amir Akhtar (performed by Danish Husain). Their conversations only add a fun element to the crime thriller episode.

The transition in the episode from the introduction of Binny Chaudhary (played by Rahul Bhat) to a flashback set a few months earlier in New Delhi in 2011 is quite thrilling. It creates a sense of intrigue, as viewers already know the outcome but are now drawn into discovering why and how it happened. This storytelling approach adds a unique twist, making it an interesting technique that writers can explore further in the long run.

Abhishek is so dedicated to his job that he even picks up a news story while using the restroom, which is both funny and important to the plot. Saba Azad’s character Maya has a short but interesting role, especially when she tells Abhishek to only listen to her boss Amir Akhtar because he is too self-absorbed.

Negative Aspects:

Episode 1 could have been longer, as it introduced multiple subplots that felt rushed. The journalism and police departments decode a message indicating that Binny Chaudhary is active, a heroine is in Delhi, and hawala money is being sent to Afghanistan. Sounds confusing? That’s because the message lacks clarity, which might leave viewers puzzled. However, this very mystery is what will keep you hooked for the next episodes.

Series Quality:

Grey-shaded narratives don’t appeal to me, so I found myself looking away at times. However, the gripping background music and Abhishek’s amusing interactions with his colleague, the police, the newspaper editor, and the press conference photographer add a touch of entertainment, making the series engaging enough to keep watching.

Verdict: 3/5

While the Crime Beat series does well in presenting the when, what, and how of the story, it leaves out the big why, making the deeper motives unclear. However, the strong atmosphere, thrilling background music, and engaging character interactions such as Abhishek’s meetings with his editor, a press conference photographer, and police officials ensure that the narrative is gripping and makes the series a good one-time watch.
