Review of Episode 1: Main Phir Tujhe Milungi
The first episode of Bada Naam Karenge introduces viewers to Ratlam’s influential Raathi family, who are on the lookout for a prospective bride for Rishabh Raathi. However, Rishabh is hesitant and visibly uncomfortable with the idea of meeting a potential match. He appears distracted, and keen on chatting with someone on his mobile. On the other hand, Surbhi (played by Ayesha Kaduskar) is cheerful and excited to meet Rishabh and his family. The families gather for what initially seems like a typical marriage proposal meeting, but a surprising twist is revealed when the past connection between Rishabh and Surbhi is shown.
During the COVID-19 lockdown in India, Rishabh and Surbhi found themselves stuck in the same house following a party at Rishabh’s home. This raises interesting questions: Did they get to know each other during that time? Were they already in a relationship without their families’ knowledge? These questions are unanswered, thus attracting viewers to continue watching the remaining eight episodes.
Positive Aspects:
- All the characters introduced in Episode 1 come across as lively, cheerful, and relatable without unnecessary drama.
- The story takes its time to introduce each character, preventing confusion despite the large supporting cast.
- Rishabh’s decision to work in a competitor’s company to gain experience and later expand his family’s sweets business offers a motivational message for young viewers.
- In a refreshing move from much of today’s OTT content, this series is suitable for family viewing without the need to skip awkward scenes.
- The strong writing and interesting plot keep viewers interested, helping them to watch the entire season.
Negative Aspects:
- The parallel storytelling between flashbacks to 2020 and present-day 2024 might be confusing for viewers who are not fully attentive to the slow-paced narrative.
Performances:
- Kanwaljit Singh shines as Anand Raathi, the traditional yet kind head of the family.
- Jameel Khan delivers an interesting performance as Lalit Gupta, a middle-class teacher with a weird personality who amusingly orders three beers for his family while waiting for the groom’s family.
- The rest of the cast does their part well but since this is episode 1, so the heads of the families were focused on well in order to help the viewers understand their contrasting personalities.
Verdict: 3/5
If you enjoy Rajshri-style romantic and family dramas, Bada Naam Karenge offers a nostalgic yet refreshing web series format. The first episode successfully hooks the audience, making them eager to discover how Rishabh and Surbhi explore their dual lives and evolving relationships against the backdrop of family expectations.
