Highlights
A compelling performer and an hilarious Comedy actor, Boman Irani now takes the Directorial chair in Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Mehta Boys’ that tells the tale of how the relationship of a father and son change over a course of time and cuts a slice of a 48 hours of them together. With a controlled set of cast that includes actor Bomani Irani, Avinash Tiwary and Shreya Chaudhry, the movie definitely impresses.
‘The Mehta Boys’ Plot and Premise
Amay, a young architect, suddenly loses his mother, making him forced to visit his parents’ home. He and his father are estranged and detached with no particular reason but life and its choices. Shiv, the father is old fashioned and sticks to his principles and merely makes an effort to mend his relationship with his son. With only the first daughter Anu pulling them together to make an effort, she insists her father move to America with her family, but some mishap happens which leaves the father and son to spend 48 hours in Mumbai together.
The father enters this different phase and part of his son’s life which he never experienced and so ignites the good old ego clash of two men who want the last say. Will the two adult men mend and bend their ways or stay stubborn and detach even further is the story of ‘The Mehta Boys’.

The Positive Aspects
The premise, although nothing new is fresh for the day and time where the rush and racy subjects are hitting new heights, Boman Irani maintains a low, grounded story to be spoken for his directorial debut. A story that starts at a point branches out addressing unspoken human emotions and their inability after a point to sustain the comfort and love is addressed painfully and honestly.
The way Boman Irani chose his objective symbols and metaphors to play out as shadow figures like the colour Red or the subtle scene where he gives the Red Saree to Zara is brilliant and is surely his vision from years of experience. The breakpoint scene of holding the handbrake, the two characters are also trying to take control which results in a crash that gives them a much needed message.
The Casting of Avinash Tiwary to go head to head with Boman Irani and at times reciprocate confusion, guilt and the unknown ghost of growing ego is very visible as the actors wear their emotions on sleeve, making ‘The Mehta Boys’ a conspicuous tale of underlying emotions.
It could not be more perfect to not chuckle at the childish antics of Boman Irani who plays Shiv, an unashamed Old Soul who takes pride in using his Typewriter and the memories filled Gramophone, also realises his ways of life and accepts the fact that his son is grown and in fact not the boy who was weak and needed his father. The close up angles adding to the growing tension from scene to scene adds a chill to the story, a conscious and tactical move.
The Negative Aspects
In putting forth the relationship of the Father and Son, Boman Irani, the director successfully emotes and connects the audience to travel along for the tear jerking plot, which could have been used more rather than pulling the boardroom sequences of Amay given multiple chances that are neither for the raising tension nor for any active change except for the CEO to give him some ‘fatherly’ advice to connect it with his own.
The Verdict
A Worthy emotional train that takes you through some of the most beautiful memories of childhood as often narrated by Boman Irani’s character in the film recalling his times with his wife and son or the simplest of things given a trait like the colours makes it a poetic dedication to the detached yet attached fathers and sons. A slightly extended nevertheless significant movie for streaming for a profound story and proper cast and making.
