MRS. is a Hindi-language drama movie directed by Arati Kadav. The film is an official remake of the Malayalam drama film The Great Indian Kitchen released in 2021. The film revolves around the story of a young woman whose life changes drastically after she gets married in a traditional household. The film opted for a direct release on OTT platform Zee5 on 7 February 2025.

Cast:

  • Sanya Malhotra plays the role of Richa who is a passionate dancer but holds onto her dreams after her marriage.
  • Nishant Dahiya plays the role of Richa’s husband Diwakar who is shown to be quite controlling and quite insensitive towards his wife.
  • Kanwaljit Singh is the strict father-in-law.
  • Loveleen Mishra and Varun Badola also have roles to play as family members who add more emotional pain to Richa’s marital life.

Storyline:

Mrs. introduces us to Richa, a young woman whose life changes for the worse after her marriage. Having a passion for dance and hope in her eyes, Richa gets married to Diwakar, just to find herself in a typical patriarchal household where women are expected to cook, clean, and serve their families without ever voicing their thoughts or needs. While watching this film, you will pinch yourself to know if this is 2025 and if such households really exist even in today’s times. But that’s a reality of Richa’s house shown in Mrs. movie. Richa’s husband goes out to earn money and serve in his job as a doctor but he really has no empathetic side. Richa’s father-in-law is a retired man who often exerts authority and demands constant care and attention. No one understands Richa’s hard work or even appreciates and she is expected to sacrifice her dreams of being a dancer without complaint. The story is about Richa’s emotional journey as she slowly breaks free from this suffocating life and decides to live her life on her own terms.

Review

Positive Aspects:

The film Mrs. has a strong social message about women’s rights, personal space, and freedom. It clearly gives us a picture of the daily struggles of several women in Indian households and every woman who watches the film will surely relate to one or many incidents that happen in the kitchen and the house with Richa. The film reminds the viewers to appreciate and love the women who dedicate their lives to the welfare of their family members without expecting anything in return.

Negative Aspects:

Many scenes are not required in order to show Richa’s daily life, it looks repetitive. Also, the film’s pace is slow and requires patience till the point Richa becomes a rebel to stop the emotional abuse happening to her.

Quality:

The film’s quality is good and those who haven’t watched its Malayalam and Tamil versions, may really feel like watching something bright on-screen.

Performances

Sanya Malhotra as Richa is shining throughout the movie Mrs. because she portrays the various emotions that a woman goes through and her transformation from a quiet, submissive wife to a confident and fearless woman is something you can experience as well. Sanya’s performance may make you watch till the end of the film as you want to really know if Richa gets her personal freedom and the respect she deserves in life or not. Kanwaljit Singh’s performance as Richa’s father-in-law really makes you feel angry, which just means he has done his job well while Nishant Dahiya’s performance as Richa’s husband may really make you feel like slapping him hard when he says he didn’t get the time to fix the kitchen sink issue, which means he also did his part effortlessly.

Verdict: 3/5

Mrs. is about those women in Indian families who almost work like unpaid maids and get no treatment as respecting family members. Yeah, the film is using the age-old story of housewives but the theme being relevant even today in many households, sends a wake-up call to viewers to be more thoughtful and respectful towards women, particularly mothers and wives. I liked the film as it inspired me to follow my dreams and live life on my own terms, just like Richa took the bold decision. Watch the film to support empathy and change in women’s lives.
