The list of people whose loss is sending shock waves across the industry is only increasing in 2025. It is a devastating update here that the Former Film Independent President Josh Welsh, has passed away from cancer at the age of 62.
Josh Welsh passes away from colon cancer at 62:
For those unaware, the late Josh Welsh suffered cancer. He was getting treatment for the same within the last five years. But, because his condition only worsened, Welsh ultimately succumbed to colon cancer. He died peacefully with his wife and daughter at home on December 31, 2024.

The friends of late Josh Welsh confirmed his demise through a post on Instagram:
Taking to the official Instagram account of the late Josh, his friends wrote a heartfelt caption that read, “Dear friends, Josh put down his guitar and left to sing with the angels on the last day of 2024. With broken hearts, we celebrate his tremendous life force, his generosity, and his love of connection. We will carry him in our hearts forever.”

As president of Film Independent, Welsh supervised all programs and procedures of the nonprofit organization. Film Independent grew enormously under Welsh’s robust and leveled leadership. With the membership amplifying manifolds each day.
Welsh worked at Film Independent for more than two decades but his massive growth and involvement began in 1996 when he was a young actor who began his career as an active volunteer every year at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

As president of Film Independent since 2012, he managed all programs and processes for the nonprofit. The association expanded its working team, funding, programming slate, and membership under his progressive guidance and also strengthened its strategic business alliances and partnerships.
Moreover, the late Welsh also grew and developed the organization’s dedication to fostering multiplicity in the film industry and heightened Film Independent’s role as a massive support system for all filmmakers.
