Bengali filmmaker Arun Roy is known for his critically acclaimed and cinematic masterpiece films in Bengali cinema, which include Bagha Jatin (2023) and Hiralal (2021). According to the recent reports, he is no more and has passed away on Thursday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The maverick Bengali director, Arun Roy, 56, surrendered to a painful and agonizing lung infection while he was under treatment at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Because of the worsening condition, the prolific filmmaker unfortunately passed away on Thursday morning.

Dr. Kinjal Nanda confirms the news of the late filmmaker’s demise through a Facebook Post:

Moreover, Dr. Kinjal Nanda from the hospital officially confirmed the news of his sad demise through a Facebook post. Furthermore, she also explained that Roy had been immediately admitted to the hospital recently due to deteriorating health conditions amid his ongoing cancer treatment. Despite being in the ICU and supported by a BiPAP system, his situation decayed further, needing intrusive ventilation.

In an emotional Facebook post, Dr. Kinjal Nanda expressed her grief and sorrow, by writing, “Stay in peace my Hiralal, just like the original Hiralal.”

Besides, Dr. Kinjal Nanda also informed viewers and fans about the important details. As per her Facebook post, the deceased filmmaker Arun Roy’s mortal remains will be taken to his Haridevpur house at 1:00 PM today, and later on, his body will be taken to the Technician Studio.

Late filmmaker Arun Roy’s real name was Arunava Raychaudhuri. He slowly gained recognition and prominence with his exceptionally successful and critically acclaimed directorial venture Bengali drama film Hiralal. This movie got rave reviews from critics and audiences for its rousing narrative and stellar cast performances. The film featured Bengali actor Dr. Kinjal Nanda in the lead role.

Roy followed up his debut success with the subsequent Bengali blockbuster and critically acclaimed film 8/12 Binoy Badal Dinesh (2022). This movie only made his foothold and repertoire more versatile in terms of being a filmmaker who brought history and patriotism to life in a well-balanced and riveting style on the silver screen.

However, his magnum opus was Bagha Jatin, a film that revolved around the life of the daring revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee, portrayed by Dev. This film was loved by the masses, critics, and audiences and also got prolific reviews as well.

It was during the shooting of Bagha Jatin that Roy was formally diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Despite the painful diagnosis, the director remained dedicated and determined in his commitment to his work. Before his demise, he had finished the filming schedule of Aranyer Din Ratri in the middle of his ongoing cancer treatment.
