West was born on October 20, 1934, in Bradford, England. Before his illustrious career as a mainstream actor in films and television, West was a renowned stage actor who performed plays. As a stage actor in his earliest days, he made his London debut at the Piccadilly Theatre in 1959 in the play Caught Napping. After creating a name for himself as a stage performer, he then became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for three seasons, appearing in the most iconic and popular plays like The Comedy of Errors, Timon of Athens, The Jew of Malta, and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

However, his big-screen breakthrough role came with the hit television series Edward the Seventh, which premiered on ATV in 1975.
