The second installment of the hit ‘Dune’ franchise has returned to India for a re-release. The film released on big screens across the country on Holi 2025, the same date as Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’. Its performance has not been appealing, though.
Starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgård, ‘Dune 2’ continues to face challenges in India. On its first day of re-release, the film minted approximately Rs 50 lakhs.
Dune 2: Global success but limited attention from India
‘Dune 2′ is based on Paul Atreides’ (Timothee) journey as he joins the Fremen people of Arrakis to battle House Harkonnen. Filming took place in Hungary, Italy, Jordan and the UAE. Initially selected for a 2023 release, the film released in the US on March 1.
‘Dune 2’ earned more than $700 million on the global box office and recently secured a couple of Oscars, too – in Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. It had also been nominated in Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design categories.
Despite its global success, ‘Dune 2′ has been struggling to get a great response from Indian audiences. One of the primary reasons could be the Indian audiences’ limited exposure to foreign films. But the makers should also have put more effort into promotions.
