The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Captain America: Brave New World, starts off sluggishly, bordering on a snoozefest. However, it redeems itself in the latter half with a thrilling ride that keeps fans engaged—at least momentarily.

Since Avengers: Endgame marked the farewell of our beloved original Avengers—Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Black Widow—Marvel fans have been yearning for that signature MCU magic. Unfortunately, recent films like Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have left audiences underwhelmed, and the box office numbers reflect that disappointment. But MCU loyalists remain hopeful, and with Brave New World, Marvel attempts to reinvigorate Captain America’s legacy, this time with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson stepping into the iconic role after Chris Evans‘ Steve Rogers. The big question remains—does this film manage to recapture the Avengers’ charm? Let’s dive in.

Plot Overview

Following the emergence of Celestial Tiamut—now known as “Celestial Island”—a global race ensues to secure adamantium, a newly discovered metal within it. Amidst this political frenzy, Thaddeus Ross (played by the legendary Harrison Ford) is elected as the President of the United States and is tasked with ensuring fair trade negotiations for the coveted resource.

To combat illegal dealings, Ross enlists Sam Wilson (Captain America) and the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres, to intercept a black-market sale of stolen adamantium in Oaxaca, orchestrated by the Serpent Society and their leader, Sidewinder. Upon completing the mission, Wilson introduces Torres to Isaiah Bradley for advanced training.

Meanwhile, Ross unveils his ambitious plan to reform the Avengers under his leadership. But before any plans materialize, a shocking attack at the White House shakes the nation. Isaiah Bradley is the prime suspect, but Sam Wilson is convinced of his innocence. Determined to uncover the real perpetrator, he embarks on a mission that unravels deeper secrets than he ever imagined. Who is behind the attack? Well, you’ll have to watch the film to find out!

What Works
1. Anthony Mackie’s Nuanced Performance

Stepping into the shoes of Captain America was never going to be easy, especially after Chris Evans’ unforgettable portrayal. But Anthony Mackie delivers a solid performance, bringing a sense of calm, resilience, and righteousness to the role. His transition from a composed leader to a fierce warrior is seamless, making his Captain America a compelling watch.

2. Harrison Ford—The Scene-Stealer

While Mackie holds his ground, it’s Harrison Ford who truly steals the show. Not only does he embody the authoritative presence of President Ross, but he also surprises audiences with a jaw-dropping transformation as Red Hulk that no one saw coming. Without giving too much away, let’s just say this twist makes the film worth watching.

3. Well-Choreographed Action Sequences

Although the film’s overall pacing is sluggish, the action sequences inject much-needed adrenaline. The fight choreography is slick, and the animation quality demonstrates Marvel’s continued advancements in visual effects. As expected, the climax delivers the most exhilarating battle, with Captain America wielding his vibranium shield in full force. But even he finds himself outmaneuvered by a formidable opponent. And trust us—this unexpected showdown is one you don’t want to miss.

What Doesn’t Work

1. Lacks the Classic Marvel Magic

The biggest issue with Brave New World is its struggle to match the narrative depth and emotional impact of earlier MCU films. Director Julius Onah’s efforts are respectable, but the storytelling lacks the gripping intensity that once kept fans on the edge of their seats. Gone are the jaw-dropping visuals and iconic moments that made Marvel movies unforgettable.

2. Pacing Issues

The first half of the film is painfully slow, testing the patience of even the most devoted MCU fans. By the time the interval arrives, one can’t help but suppress a yawn. The film takes far too long to set up its story, making the payoff feel overdue rather than earned.

3. Absence of Marvel’s Signature Humor

Remember when Marvel movies had audiences roaring with laughter thanks to their sharp wit and perfectly timed humor? Sadly, Brave New World lacks that charm. While there are a few moments that elicit chuckles, the film misses the lighthearted banter that made previous installments so enjoyable.

4. Disappointing Post-Credit Scene

Marvel’s post-credit scenes have always been a major draw, teasing fans with exciting glimpses of what’s to come. But this time, the reveal feels lackluster, leaving audiences wanting more. Considering that Avengers: Secret Wars is next in line, we expected a bigger, more tantalizing tease—but alas, it falls flat.

Final Verdict: 2.5/5 Stars

Captain America: Brave New World is a mixed bag. While Anthony Mackie proves his worth as the new Captain America and Harrison Ford delivers an electrifying performance, the film ultimately suffers from a weak narrative, slow pacing, and a lack of the Marvel magic we all crave. The action sequences are thrilling, but they can’t completely compensate for the film’s shortcomings.

For die-hard MCU fans, the movie is still worth a watch—if only to witness Ford’s surprising turn. But for those hoping for a true return to form for Marvel, Brave New World may not be the revival we’ve been waiting for. Here’s hoping that Avengers: Secret Wars finally brings back the glory days of the MCU!
