Bong Joon Ho – prominent filmmaker from South Korea – is truly one of a kind. He has only made 8 films in the past quarter of a century. But each project has been thoroughly chiseled to turn it into a precious gem.
His 2019 feature ‘Parasite’ grabbed four Oscars, including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best International Feature Film. It brought South Korea to the front seat at the Oscars, in addition to many other ceremonies across the globe.
His latest project ‘Mickey 17’ stars Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo in key roles. It is based on a cloning technology that can reprint a person after their death. Throughout his career, Bong has been trying to bring attention to a number of societal crises.

8. Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000)
‘Barking Dogs Never Bite’ has an offbeat sense of humour that is going to become a trademark for his later films. Completely annoyed by loud barking noises, an academic decides to take drastic action against dogs in his apartment building.

7. Mother (2009)
‘Mother’ is possibly the most underrated Bong Joon Ho movie. In this release, a mother learns that her mentally challenged son is being accused of a brutal murder and conducts an independent probe to prove his innocence in the case.

6. Snowpiercer (2013)
Based on a French comic book, ‘Snowpiercer’ is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth that attempts to counteract the effects of global heating. The attempt backfires, though. The last remaining humans ride a train – the poorest people in the back and the richest in the front.

5. Mickey 17 (2025)
Bong Joon Ho’s latest release, ‘Mickey 17’ also highlights class differences and apocalypse. The year is 2054 and humans are boarding a spaceship bound for planet Niflheim. The expendable program is the main hook factor here.

4. Okja (2017)
For a long time, Mija has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja – a fascinating animal – at her home in the mountains of South Korea. But a multinational company is adamant about kidnapping Okja. Can Mija protect her best friend from trouble?

3. The Host (2006)
‘The Host’ is a gem, truthfully. In this Bong Joon Ho movie, an unidentified monster emerges from the Han River in South Korea’s Seoul and begins attacking people. One victim’s loving family is determined to rescue her from its clutches.

2. Parasite (2019)
Through ‘Parasite’, director Bong has taken an aim at the class disparity in South Korea in the most entertaining manner possible. A struggling family starts to leech off a rich household. There are some dire consequences, though.

1. Memories of Murder (2003)
Bong has done a fabulous job in directing ‘Memories of Murder’. South Korea is still under the military’s reign. One experienced detective from Seoul joins a couple of local and unreliable counterparts to probe a series of mysterious murder cases.
