Streets across India are looking more colourful as Makar Sankranti 2025 has reached us again. This annual celebration is about the Sun’s transition from the Sagittarius zodiac sign to Capricorn. In some states, it is also called Pongal, Lohri or Bhogali Bihu.
This year, Makar Sankranti is celebrated on January 14. It marks the beginning of the auspicious period of Uttarayana, considered to be highly significant for spiritual practices. This day also marks the end of the harvest season in different parts of the country.
The roots of Makar Sankranti are deeply connected to the Hindu deity Surya (Sun God). The day is also linked to numerous mythological stories. It is believed that Samudra Manthan or the Churning of the Ocean occurred during the Makar Sankranti period.
